Inpsirational films

When looking and researching about creatures and human transformation, i thought it would be helpful to look at films that are inspirational in this sort of transformation, two films i find particularly useful are, Splice and Beastly. These films are quite different but both bring a different idea to my project. i wanted to learn more about them through research.

The Spilce film is a very interesting film, its quite different to my original idea, of human to creature, this signifies how a creature has formed into a human. From this i got many ideas, every film i watch that has similar traits to my idea of creating a creature, they makeups used in these film on the character all resemble a beautiful and mysterious appeal. They leave u guessing is she beautiful or is it the mystery that keeps you guessing. Splice Film in rough summary starts with two young rebellious scientists are told by their employers to halt groundbreaking work that has seen them produce new creatures with medical benefits by splicing together multiple organisms’ DNA. They decide to secretly continue their work, but this time splicing in human DNA. Clive Nicoli and Elsa Kast are scientists of the Newstead Pharmaceutics researching the splice of DNA from different animals to form new genetic beings and find medical benefits to mankind. They have just created the hybrid Ginger and Fred and now they intend to join together human DNA to alter the genetic structure of their experiment. When the senior management calls off their experiment, they decide to secretly proceed and they generate a life form with human characteristics. They call it Dren and Elsa is very fond of their creation that grows up fast and showing intelligence. When the company shutdown their experiment, they bring Dren to Elsa’s abandoned farm and the scientists raise Dren like a daughter. But when it reaches adulthood, the sex drive of Dren is activated and Clive and Elsa learn that they have a serious problem to resolve. I thought a short clip included in my blog would help readers to understand and see what i do.

I love the directors concept of the development of cells into a human, they use science to create a creature who then goes on to gain the features and traits of a human. The creature, has smooth, silk like features, with a alien look. The makeup artist has used quite a subtile and simple design, but this works perfectly, i think that the amount of prosthetics used works really well with the concept. This is unlike my idea, as i want a more prominent design, with bold features. This leads onto my next film i have looked at which is BEASTLY

Beastly is another brilliant film that shows the change of the human body and how a simple change of appearance can make other people and yourself think your a creature, or a monster.

Beastly is a 2011 romantic fantasy drama film loosely based on Alex Flinn’s 2007 novel. It is a retelling of the fairytale Beauty and the Beast and is set in modern-day New York City. The film was written and directed by Daniel Barnz and stars Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer.

The character Kyle Kingson, is an arrogant and vain son of wealthy and equally arrogant and vain news anchor Rob Kingson, bullies Kendra Hilferty who magically transforms handsome Kyle into a bald, tattooed, and scarred shell. If Kyle does not find someone who loves him by the next spring he will remain in this ugly state forever. Kyle is taken to live in a private house with their maid Zola Davies and a blind tutor Will. Both are a comfort to Kyle when his father begins to neglect him.

As spring draws closer, Kyle finds himself infatuated with Lindy Taylor, a girl from whom he had kept his distance at his former school. He sees her father, a drug addict, engaged in an altercation with two drug dealers and shoots one dead while the other vows to kill Lindy. “Hunter” persuades Lindy’s father to allow her to move in with Kyle. Lindy is furious about hiding and doesn’t speak to Kyle. But, eventually, Kyle reveals his state, and they begin to warm up to each other. Kyle writes a letter professing his love for Lindy but does not give it to her for fear of rejection. He visits Kendra to plead for more time; she refuses, but agrees to restore Will’s vision and grant green cards to Zola’s three children in Jamaica if he gets Lindy to fall in love with him.

The criminal who threatened Lindy’s life lands in jail. Lindy’s father overdoses and is in the hospital. Kyle permits Lindy to leave and see her father and drives her to the station. He gives her the letter but regrets doing so as she tells him he’s a good friend. Lindy calls him after reading the letter, but being heartbroken Kyle does not answer the phone. Persuaded by Will and Zola, Kyle goes to meet Lindy one last time before she leaves on a school trip to Machu Picchu. Kyle tells her to go, and as she leaves, Lindy professes her love for “Hunter”, saying the words “I Love You” to break Kyle’s “Hunter” curse. Kyle’s normal self is restored, and Lindy runs out looking for “Hunter”. But Lindy does not recognize him until she calls Hunter’s phone, and Kyle’s phone starts ringing. When Lindy realizes that Hunter is in fact Kyle the two share a passionate kiss in the side of the street. This is more a love story than a tale, but it does show the relation between being ugly on the outside and inner beauty, This is what i want to convey in my creature, this ugly woman, but hiding her inner beauty through her shell.

In this i love the makeup, the tattoos are similar to veins, or tree vines, i really love the effect this gives upon the human body, this has intrigued me to look into veins, and maybe use this as an idea.  I love the effect that veins gives upon a picture, it instantly makes a person look distraught and more distinguished.

The character Kyle looks very different from most beasts we’ve seen on the screen. He is even a lot different than described in the book, he is portrayed as hairy werewolf. Makeup artists Tony Gardner, was key in turning this actor into the monster he was portrayed as, he felt that there was too many werewolf films going on at this time and he wanted this makeup stand alone. They wanted to portray the loss of something great, and to the character this was his look and hair, he had great vanity. Tony wanted to portray something that no one could take off, hair could be shaved, piercing could be take off. Tony was interview and he said they wanted to create some sort of texture, like tree bark, this is where the design for the trees and flowers from. I always want to incoperate the feelings and traits of a character into my makeup, this is exactly what they have down within this film, they have used his vanity to develop the makeup and scars. This re-telling of the classic fable of “Beauty and the Beast”.This is a modern twist to an old tale.
