After looking at the swan, i wanted to try and develop my idea, so that i am not directly taking my ideas from the original makeup from ‘black swan’. I feel that by look at various birds i can abstract different attributes and combine them in one design, this will create a new image and a original design. Birds can come in various colours from the darkest black of the magpie to tropical birds from the rainforest. Each bird will bring a fresh perspective and idea. As there is many species of birds,i spent a lot of time looking and researching to find the birds that colours and shape inspired me, i had to be quite selective with the ones i used for my development. For This i looked at the physical attraction of the bird, and its attributes.
The first bird i came across was the King fish. With its top-heavy physique, energetic flight, and piercing rattle, the Belted Kingfisher seems to have an air of self-importance as it patrols up and down rivers and shorelines. It nests in burrows along earthen banks and feeds almost entirely on aquatic prey, diving to catch fish and crayfish with its heavy, straight bill. These ragged-crested birds are a powdery blue-gray; males have one blue band across the white breast, while females have a blue and a chestnut band. It quite a small bird, with physical beauty. Its small feathers and quirkiness attracted me to its beauty. I love the soft spiky feathers they have at the top of there beak and head.
Black Bee Eater..
The Black Bee eater bird, its fascinating, its silky black feathers with flashes of colour attracted me, Its has Black with a scarlet chin and throat, streaked breast, plea blue eyebrows, belly , undertail-coverts and rump, rufous primaries. Its feathers range in size, from small feathers on the head, to longer tail. I love the flashes of colour, it is something i am thinking about when designing, contrasting the dark with the bright to get a mystical look.
From these images i decided i was looking for a particular type of bird, i wanted the birds feathers to range in size and colour, shorter spiky feathers, to long protruding feathers, changing in colour and contrasting each other. I love birds that feathers are sticking out around the body. This has inspired me to use feathers throughout my hair design, maybe applying some weaves, and creating a nest, bringing together the habitat and the birds attributes. I started to look on pintrest for birds with the attributes i wanted, i found this really helpful as there was so many. I created a small mood board with a fews selected images that i liked and inspired me.
Before researching birds i never realised extent to the variety of birds, it opened my eyes to birds i never thought about. A bird that i think is really beautiful and has gave me inspiration for ideas is the Tricolored heron. I love the spiky feathers, and the light feathers.
Tricolored herons are medium-sized birds with the long legs and neck characteristic of herons and egrets. Legs are yellow in the non-breeding season and pink in the breeding season. In flight and at rest Egretta tricolor holds its neck at a curve, similar to a “S”. They have a rather long and pointed bill that, in the non-breeding season, is yellow with a black tip. In the breeding season, the yellow turns to blue. Their underside and neck is a white, a characteristic that is unique to this particular species, but makes them very difficult to find because they blend into the vegetation in their habitat. The young are differently colored than the adults and have a “rich chestnut head and neck…and chestnut feathering on blue-gray back. The tricolored heron is a bird of shallow marshes and shores, using mudflats, mangrove swamps and bays”. They often prefer mangroves, swamps of freshwater and the outskirts of rivers to live in. There have been exceptions found to these habitat areas; tricolored heron colonies have been found living on dry ground and still others at high altitudes.
This bird gave me an inspired idea. I wanted to combine this and the aspects of the black swan to create a character, i found a animated image in which i really love and want to work from. This image has inspired me to go forward and work with the my idea of a creature in the body of a woman, taking a folklore and making it real. The inspiration from this image comes from the relation of the feathers to the bird. In this image I’m not quite sure if it is feathers or fur, but it works really well. Although the idea of a creature is ugly, this image still comes across as beautiful. It more mystical than scary. This is the idea i want to come across, that this is not a creepy creature, but a legend of the tales. The image has inspired me to work with the whole body not just the face, i realised that a full body would work better in context. I need to look into deeper research into myths legends, even other creatures, and animals to enhance my idea further.
